Aging is a simple concept which nonetheless encompasses a multiplicity of more or less implicit meanings, the misuse of which can lead to serious misconceptions that need to be cleared up. The first one concerns the nature of the phenomenon, which is thought to be typical of wealthy nations. The second misconception has to do with the scope of the phenomenon, which some limit to the question of how to finance the growing number of retirees. The second part of this paper will seek to show how this view has been overly influenced by the specific situation of Europe and Japan.
