...our lifestyles are killing us
But we do have challenges. We see life- style-related risks such as obesity becoming rampant – three times as many people are obese today as they were in 1975. This is driven by our life- styles as well as poor diet. In addition, sleep disorders are on the rise.
When we look at this from a wider per- spective through the factors contribut- ing to the years of lost life, we see the impact that our lifestyles are having on our mortality: the top 4 factors as seen in the  gure below are all things we can generally do something about. This demonstrates how much can be gained through a focus on health – how much mortality can be improved through encouraging active and healthy life- styles.
