When Beatrice Parravicini began studying the financial mechanics behind risk at Cattolica University in Milan, she wasn’t chasing accolades – she was chasing answers. But curiosity, determination, and a passion for bridging technical insight with real-world impact led her to something more: the 2024 SCOR Italy Actuarial Award. Her journey, from student to award-winning researcher to Junior Underwriter at SCOR, reflects not only personal achievement but also a broader shift in the insurance industry – toward innovation, resilience, and a deeper sense of societal purpose.

“For me, what SCOR is doing with this award is important,” Beatrice says. “It shows that SCOR wants to invest in young students, in the younger generation and to spread the fact that reinsurance offers huge potential, not only speaking about profitability, but also about what you can learn and finding a career where you can help be the link between what society and people really need.”

For more than 25 years, SCOR’s annual Actuarial Awards have recognized actuarial excellence and empowered the next generation of actuarial professionals around the world. Presented annually in half a dozen countries where SCOR operates, the Actuarial Awards encourage research on cutting-edge topics like parametric solutions, emerging risks, and sustainable underwriting. Through these awards, SCOR seeks to foster innovation and attract forward-thinking talent into the industry. And for many winners like Beatrice, the recognition is more than just an academic milestone: it is a springboard into the professional world.

Beatrice’s thesis, “Parametric insurance coverages against natural catastrophe risks: a new risk transfer solution in a world of climate extremes,” focused on parametric insurance as a tool to address the growing risks posed by climate change. Her research explored how these innovative coverages could complement traditional insurance structures, offering faster, more transparent payouts in response to predefined climate triggers. This kind of thinking, bridging technical depth with societal impact, is precisely what the SCOR Actuarial Awards were designed to recognize.

Not long before receiving the award, Beatrice joined SCOR’s Milan office as a trainee. That experience quickly evolved into a full-time role as Junior Underwriter, where she now supports senior colleagues in pricing, technical analysis, and the complex renewal process. Initially inclined toward a career in finance, she was drawn to the insurance sector after a guest lecturer from SCOR piqued her interest.

“I was surprised in a positive way about this unknown world,” she recalls, “and I decided to make this jump – a blind jump – into insurance.”

That moment sparked a shift that would eventually lead her to both academic recognition and a position at SCOR. What continues to motivate her is the broader purpose behind her work.

“Reinsurance is very sensitive about societal themes,” she explains. “It tries to give direction to society and provide solutions to some societal needs.”

Her thesis reflected this mindset, offering practical ideas for building resilience in the face of environmental volatility.

Now, in her role as a Junior Underwriter at SCOR, she sees a future where technology and automation will play an increasingly important role in underwriting, making processes more efficient and client responses faster.

As the industry continues to navigate complex risks and global challenges, the SCOR Actuarial Awards – and the young professionals they celebrate – offer a glimpse of what’s ahead: a sector shaped by curiosity, commitment, and a clear sense of purpose.
