The Power of Authenticity: Embracing Your True Self
Sarah Sengdy, A letter to my younger self
Letter to my Younger Self
Dear Younger Me,
I see you, 10 years ago, walking into SCOR’s Paris office as a trainee—filled with questions and unsure of how you’ll carve out a place in the professional world. I know the doubts that occupy your mind, the voice whispering that you’re too different, that the headwinds you face are insurmountable. I know you’re already trying hard to fit in, to match what you think the professional world expects from you.
But let me tell you something you might not believe just yet: those headwinds you think are holding you back? They’re actually your strength.
Yes, you’re a woman. Yes, you have Asian origins but you’re French, the daughter of first-generation immigrants, and you grew up in the suburbs of Paris—a place others don’t expect much from. Yes, you’re shorter than most people in a room. And no, you don’t raise your voice the loudest. But none of that makes you less than. These things make you you. And they don’t disqualify you from being successful—they are, in fact, your keys to success.
Throughout your career:
- You’ll have the opportunity to meet a wide variety of leaders, some of whom you’ll relate to.
- You’ll have the chance to be continuously stimulated to learn more. Little do you know that you’ll become a qualified actuary.
- You’ll encounter people who will value your authenticity, and they will give you confidence—confidence you’ll learn to build for yourself, too. That confidence will help you lead a team of talented individuals and create an environment where others can thrive alongside you.
Let’s be clear: the journey won’t be smooth. You’ll face challenges, including people who will try to put you in a box. But those challenges will teach you resilience. They’ll help you grow into someone who can handle whatever comes your way.
My letter to you is not a conclusion. I, too, am still learning and striving to improve every day to become a leader I can recognize myself in—not one who shouts over others or pretends to be someone else, but someone who listens, builds trust, and stays true to her values.
I wanted to show you just how far you’ll go, how much you’ll accomplish, and, most importantly, how proud you’ll be—not just of what you achieve, but of the journey you’ve taken to get there.
Remember that leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all. Remember to always seek out opportunities that stimulate your curiosity and thirst for learning. And above all, remember to always stay true to yourself.
Your Future Self, Sarah
