SCOR's Sustainability Days: A deep dive into a better future
What does it mean for a global reinsurer to truly invest in a sustainable future? At SCOR, we believe that tackling the world's biggest challenges starts with understanding them. One of the ways we bring this commitment to life is through our annual Sustainability Days. This week-long, global event for all employees is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering engagement around the critical environmental challenges facing our planet today.
What are Sustainability Days and why do we host them?
Sustainability Days are an internal, company-wide initiative designed to educate, inspire, and empower our employees to make a positive impact. Through a series of conferences, masterclasses, and local activities, we aim to strengthen our collective understanding of key sustainability issues. The goal is to amplify knowledge and hence strengthen our professional expertise as a reinsurance company. By bringing together experts on critical themes such as ocean health, climate change, and plastic pollution, we create a powerful forum for educating our employees and sharing knowledge across the company. This allows our teams to deepen their understanding of complex environmental issues. These days are a testament to our belief that change starts from within, and by equipping our employees and teams with knowledge, we can drive meaningful progress.
A Journey Through Our Past Themes
Our Sustainability Days have evolved each year, tackling some of the most pressing environmental topics of our time.
- 2022: Global warming and biodiversity loss: For our inaugural event, we laid the foundation by exploring the fundamental mechanisms of global warming and the threats to biodiversity. The focus was on understanding the cause-and-effect relationships and opening a dialogue on what we can do as individuals and as a corporation.
- 2023: Plastic Pollution: The Next Sustainability Challenge? We then narrowed our focus to the pervasive issue of plastic pollution, examining its impact on our ecosystems and discussing innovative solutions to this growing problem.
- 2024: Biodiversity: We revisited the critical issue of biodiversity loss with a deeper lens and brought attention to the fact that biodiversity has been declining faster than at any time in human history.
This Year's Theme: Preserving our Oceans
From September 22nd to 26th, 2025, along with our 1013 participants, we turned our attention to the blue heart of our planet with the theme, "Preserving our Oceans." Following the momentum of the United Nations Oceans Conference, we explored the intriguing world of our oceans and the unprecedented challenges they face.
Why this focus? The reasons are as deep and diverse as the oceans themselves:
- Biodiversity: Oceans are home to an incredible array of species and protecting them is essential for maintaining balanced ecosystems.
- Food Source: Billions of people rely on the oceans for food. Sustainable practices are crucial for the health of fish populations and future generations.
- Climate Regulation: Oceans are a vital carbon sink, absorbing significant amounts of CO2 and regulating our climate. A healthy ocean is one of our best defenses against climate change.
- Oxygen Production: Marine plants like phytoplankton produce more than half of the world's oxygen.
This year's agenda was packed with insightful sessions, including:
- Masterclass on Ocean & Plastic Pollution
- Conference: From Rising Seas to Rising Risks: Oceans at the Heart of a Living Planet
- Masterclass on Ocean & Climate Change
Aligning with SCOR's Strategic Goals
The Sustainability Days are not a standalone initiative. They are closely linked to our strategic plan, "Forward 2026," and our broader commitment to sustainability. By dedicating our 2025 event to the theme of "Preserving our Oceans”, we are addressing a critical and complex issue affecting the environment today. These internal awareness campaigns are a vital tool for improving the knowledge and expertise of our employees worldwide. By fostering a deeper understanding of these interconnected environmental issues, we ensure that our entire organization is aligned with our strategic goals and empowered to develop innovative, resilient solutions for the challenges of a changing world.
Deepening our collective understanding
Conclusion
SCOR's Sustainability Days are a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in building a more resilient and sustainable future. By dedicating time to learning, discussing, and knowledge sharing, we are not only strengthening our business but also reinforcing our commitment to protecting our planet for generations to come. This commitment is further demonstrated through our partnerships such as the one with the Fondation de la Mer. Since 2023, SCOR Investment Partners has been supporting this organization in its ocean research and protection efforts. Ultimately, these internal events give our employees the deep knowledge they need to turn our purpose into practice. We continue to use knowledge to understand complex risks and build a stronger, more sustainable future for both us and our planet.
