Every September, players from across the P&C (re)insurance industry come together in Monte Carlo for the Rendez-Vous de Septembre, a cornerstone event that has shaped industry dialogue since the 1950s. But what makes this event stand out from other industry gatherings? To find out, we caught up with three SCOR colleagues during the event, to capture their first-hand impressions and insights.

Dear Younger Self,

If I could sit across from you now – wide-eyed, ambitious, and perhaps a little unsure – I’d start by saying: you’re going to be just fine. But more than that, you’re going to grow in ways you can’t yet imagine, and your journey will take turns that you would have never considered. While I won’t spoil the journey, I do want to share a few truths that I wish I had understood earlier.

(Re)insurance inherently is an international industry. To maintain stability and ensure the ability to pay claims, companies need portfolios diversified with risks from around the world. This global scope creates opportunities for international mobility within the industry. One such opportunity allowed Jimmy Pimentel to move from Brazil to the US, fulfilling his dream of living abroad in a country full of potential.

For those starting to learn about (re)insurance, you’ll notice that the role of an underwriter is very prominent across all levels of the industry. But what is an underwriter? How do you become one? And what are their tasks and responsibilities?

When Beatrice Parravicini began studying the financial mechanics behind risk at Cattolica University in Milan, she wasn’t chasing accolades – she was chasing answers. But curiosity, determination, and a passion for bridging technical insight with real-world impact led her to something more: the 2024 SCOR Italy Actuarial Award. Her journey, from student to award-winning researcher to Junior Underwriter at SCOR, reflects not only personal achievement but also a broader shift in the insurance industry – toward innovation, resilience, and a deeper sense of societal purpose.
