SCOR Foundation - Aligning competitive morbidities and causes of early onset deaths

In this study, the researchers report nationwide real-life practice in the management of prostate cancer (PC) in France, in a population of 4,936,750 men, including 692,516 patients with PC. They found that the first prostate-specific antigen test is taken too late in life, leading to a late diagnosis with reduced chances of curative therapy and a subsequent increase in mortality.

Fairness of predictive models - an application to insurance markets

In the era of big data and barely interpretable machine learning techniques, ensuring fairness and non-discrimination in predictions poses a significant challenge. At the core of the insurance industry lies the differentiation between high-risk and low-risk policyholders. However, with insurers gathering increasingly extensive data, distinguishing between justified pricing based on risk and unfair discrimination based on sensitive factors becomes more intricate. As Kranzberg's law suggests, "technology is neither inherently good nor bad; nor is it neutral." Hence, it is imperative to accurately measure discrimination to prevent its adverse effects.

SCOR Foundation - AI and Internal models : the case of banking"

On January 18, 2024, the SCOR Foundation held a webinar titled: “Artificial Intelligence and Internal models: the case of banking".
The speaker was Christophe Hurlin, Professor of Economics at the University of Orléans, Director of the Laboratoire d'Économie d'Orléans (LEO) and member of the Scientific Council of the French supervisory authority (ACPR).
Christophe Hurlin proposed a theoretical and practical reflection on the use of machine learning methods in the context of the internal ratings-based (IRB) approach to bank capital requirements. While machine learning is still rarely used in the regulatory field (IRB, IFRS 9, stress tests), recent discussions initiated by the supervisory authorities suggest that this may soon change.
This subject is crucial given the growing concerns about the potential financial instability caused by the use of opaque models.
Christophe Hurlin questioned, among other things, the performance of AI models versus classical internal models and the trade-off between performance and interpretability. He also presented an initial tentative conclusion concerning the governance of these models.

SCOR draws upon a wealth of robust clinical data and superior analytics to develop solutions that give back to society, empowering consumers to live healthier and longer.

With this mission in mind, two SCOR actuaries with innovative mindsets and a deep understanding of advanced data analytics capabilities collaborated to create the Biological Age Model (BAM) and the Good Life app in 2018. BAM utilizes wearable data to compute a user’s “Biological Age” based on an evidence-based model for both mortality and morbidity risks.

The BAM algorithm is at the heart of the Good Life app developed by SCOR/ReMark.
